Opportunities in renewable energy in South Asia

This work was carried out under the Infrastructure and Cities for Economic Development (ICED) facility.

ICED supported DFID country offices, central teams and ODA-spending Other Government Departments to deliver DFID’s Economic Development Strategy by scaling up programming and investment in infrastructure and cities. It operated between February 2016 and July 2019.

The business case for large scale deployment of renewable energy technologies in developing countries is gaining momentum. There is growing awareness that renewable energy can play a key role in addressing climate change, creating new economic opportunities, and providing energy access to those living without modern energy services. This paper looks at some of the current trends in the energy sector in South Asia and explores some of the future renewable opportunities.
